SNAPPER CLOSURE FOR 2011

Snapper will be off limits to Queensland’s commercial and recreational fishermen for six weeks next year as the state decides how to rebuild low stock.
Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister Tim Mulherin said the ban on snapper would be in force from February 15 to March 31 and would apply to recreational and commercial fishers.
The ban also covers two other species, teraglin and pearl perch, which are normally caught with snapper.
Mr Mulherin said it was an interim measure until new fishing rules could be finalised to ensure the take of snapper was sustainable after scientific research found the state’s stock had been overfished.
